Boarders fend for themselves

In 2009 I wrote a series of articles about boarding houses in Sydney, NSW after regular disturbances at a Leichhardt boarding house prompted calls for an overhaul of the industry. An industry, which experts say is grossly unregulated and offers no support services for tenants.

Neighbouring residents of an unlicensed boarding house in Prospect Street, Leichhardt said there was an increase in police call-outs to the premises during the last six months.

The owner of the boarding house declined to comment.

One resident, who did not wish to be named for fear of retribution, said the decades old boarding house only became a problem last year when new tenants moved in.

“At one point police were getting called out two to three times a day . . . and residents have seen people shooting up in their cars,” she said.
